With the sharp increase in cars in the city, the then candidate of the PSDB to the government of São Paulo in 2018, João Doria, said that if elected, would initiate a plan to expand the subway in 350 km in the next 20 years. Currently the metro network is 90 km. "This is planning as a whole, not just planning for four years. We have to think about the metropolitan system in the next 20 years. Subway is like airport: it is always a long-term vision, not a short-term vision", said the toucan, during a visit to a bus company in the South Zone of the capital.

Line 5-Lilac has new connections for passengers of the network
Despite the effort and the problems that will inevitably be faced for such a feat, the intention is to deploy 100 km of iron mesh in 4 years. At the end of the same year of 2018, there was some growth in the number of passengers after the inauguration of some stations. In October, there was a six-fold increase in passenger traffic in some of these stations, reducing overcrowding at Line 4-Yellow connections. The Line 2-Green of the Companhia de Metropolitano de São Paulo (subway) started to have 50 thousand more daily trips after the commencement of the operation during business hours of the new stations of Line 5-Lilás. The number jumped from an average of 701,000 on weekdays in August to 750,000 to 753,000 last week.
Growth has, at least somewhat, reduced overcrowding at the Line 4-Yellow connections. The branch, which leaves Luz and goes to Butantã, passing under the Consolação and Pinheiros Streets in the western zone, had since 2012 a problem of overcrowding in the tunnel that connects with Line 2-Green, in Paulista . The issue was also a constant complaint at Pinheiros Station, where Line 4 connects to CPTM.
